Distance Measuring Devices
The use of mobile phones as Distance Measuring Devices
The Rules of Golf guidance relating to the use of mobile phones as Distance Measuring Devices (DMD’s) is clear. In the event that a mobile phone has a DMD installed, then if the device also has any applications which can be used as a compass, spirit level, or to measure wind speed, temperature or gradient, then the device is non-conforming and must not be used as a DMD. This applies even in the event that the additional described applications are turned off. The device can only be used as a DMD if the extra features are deleted.
Given that most modern smart phones have these additional features pre-installed by the manufacturer, and they cannot be removed from the device, it therefore follows that many devices will be non-conforming. The iPhone is an example of such a device.
The penalty for use of a non-conforming device as a DMD will be disqualification.
In the event of any uncertainty please refer to a member of The Competition Sub-Committee so that your phone can be examined and the appropriate advice given.
